What is a Harmonic Drive?
Harmonic Drives (strain wave gears) are high-precision reduction gears that are used in almost all modern industrial robots. Their advantages over conventional gearboxes are the extremely low backlash, the high reduction ratio in a compact design and the low weight. In axes J1 and J2 of the Mitsubishi robot, they transmit the torque of the servo motor to the respective axis with the highest precision, thus enabling the exact positioning of the robot arm.

Typical signs of a defect or wear of the Harmonic Drive are: increased backlash in the affected axis, unusual noises (rattling, grinding), declining positioning accuracy, vibrations during movement or error messages from the controller regarding position deviations.
