The Harmonic Drive for axes J1/J2 of the Mitsubishi RV-E is a backlash-free strain wave gear for the older E series of Mitsubishi industrial robots. The RV-E series was one of Mitsubishi’s first compact 6-axis robot generations and, despite its age, is still in reliable use in many production facilities. This Harmonic Drive ensures the precision of the base and shoulder axes and is decisive for the overall accuracy of the robot.
What is a Harmonic Drive?
The Harmonic Drive (strain wave gear) is a compact, backlash-free precision gearbox that is installed in almost every modern industrial robot. Its three main components – the elliptical Wave Generator, the elastic Flexspline with external teeth and the rigid Circular Spline with internal teeth – produce a high-precision reduction. Unlike with planetary gearboxes, practically no backlash occurs with the Harmonic Drive, which is indispensable for repeatability in robot operation.
Installation position and function
This gearbox is used in axes J1 (base) and J2 (shoulder) of the RV-E. The J1 axis controls the horizontal rotary movement of the entire robot kinematics; the J2 axis moves the upper arm forward and backward. Both positions are subject to high mechanical loads, as they have to carry the weight of the entire upper axis structure plus payload.

Availability
Mitsubishi has discontinued production of this series. The availability of spare parts is severely limited worldwide. The RV-E series has been discontinued for many years. Mitsubishi no longer carries original spare parts. ROBTEC is one of the few suppliers that still have tested used stock for this series.
