This Harmonic Drive for axis J1 of the Mitsubishi RH-6SH is the central precision gearbox in the base axis of this proven SCARA robot. As a so-called strain wave gear (Harmonic Drive), it operates virtually backlash-free and enables the high-precision rotary movement of the entire robot arm around the vertical main axis. Without a functional Harmonic Drive in the J1 axis, no reliable positioning of the RH-6SH is possible – production stoppages and quality problems are the immediate consequence.
What is a Harmonic Drive?
A Harmonic Drive – also known as a strain wave gear – is a backlash-free precision gearbox that is regarded as the standard in robotics. It consists of three main components: the Wave Generator (elliptical drive disk), the Flexspline (thin-walled, flexible sleeve with external teeth) and the Circular Spline (rigid outer ring with internal teeth). The controlled deformation of the Flexspline achieves an extremely high reduction ratio with minimal backlash. This design enables positioning accuracies in the hundredth-of-a-millimeter range.
Installation position and function
The axis J1 (base) is the first and load-bearing rotary axis of the RH-6SH SCARA robot. It carries the entire load of the robot arm and is responsible for the horizontal swivel movement. The Harmonic Drive in this position has to transmit particularly high torques and at the same time ensure maximum repeatability. The Mitsubishi RH-6SH is a SCARA robot with a 6 kg payload that is mainly used in assembly, palletizing and pick-and-place applications.
