The Harmonic Drive for axis J2 of the Mitsubishi RV-3SB and RV-3SJB is the precision gearbox in the shoulder axis of these compact 6-axis robots with a 3 kg payload. The shoulder axis J2 is one of the most heavily stressed axes, as it has to move the entire forearm, the wrist and the payload against gravity. A perfectly functioning Harmonic Drive is indispensable here for precise and reproducible movements.
What is a Harmonic Drive?
The Harmonic Drive – referred to in English as a strain wave gear – is the industry standard for backlash-free reduction gears in robotics. Its unique operating principle is based on the controlled deformation of an elastic component (Flexspline) by an elliptical drive (Wave Generator) inside a rigid outer ring (Circular Spline). The resulting motion transmission is extremely precise, able to withstand high loads and practically backlash-free.
Installation position and function
The axis J2 (shoulder) on the RV-3SB/3SJB is responsible for the tilting movement of the upper arm – comparable to the movement of the human upper arm at the shoulder. This axis has to absorb particularly high static and dynamic loads. Signs of wear often show up as slight residual oscillation during rapid position changes or as measurable deviations in repeatability.

Availability
