The Harmonic Drive for axis J3 of the Mitsubishi RV-6SL is the backlash-free strain wave gear in the elbow axis of the long-reach variant of the RV-6S. With the same 6 kg payload, the RV-6SL offers a significantly greater reach than the standard model. This extended reach means longer lever arms and therefore higher mechanical loads on the elbow joint – as a result, the J3 Harmonic Drive is subjected to particularly heavy stress and is a frequently requested wear part.
What is a Harmonic Drive?
A Harmonic Drive is a backlash-free precision gearbox based on the strain wave gearing principle. Its three components – Wave Generator, Flexspline and Circular Spline – enable high reduction ratios with minimal size and practically zero gear backlash. The Flexspline is deformed in a controlled manner by the elliptical Wave Generator and in the process engages with the rigid Circular Spline. The resulting relative movement produces an extremely precise output rotation.
Installation position and function
The axis J3 (elbow) of the RV-6SL controls the bending of the forearm. Due to the long-reach design, the lever arm at the J3 axis is longer than on the standard RV-6S, which increases the torque load on the gearbox. Especially in palletizing and handling applications that use the full working envelope, the J3 gearbox of the RV-6SL is subject to increased wear. Early gearbox replacement prevents consequential damage to bearings and encoders.

Availability
Mitsubishi has discontinued production of this series. The availability of spare parts is severely limited worldwide. The long-reach variant RV-6SL was produced in smaller quantities than the standard RV-6S. Spare parts specifically for the SL are therefore particularly rare.
