The Harmonic Drive for axis J3 of the Mitsubishi RV-3SB and RV-3SJB is the backlash-free precision gearbox in the elbow axis of these widely used 3 kg robots. The J3 axis controls the bending and extension of the forearm – similar to the human elbow joint. This axis is involved in practically every movement of the robot and is therefore one of the most wear-intensive positions in the entire drive train.
What is a Harmonic Drive?
A Harmonic Drive (strain wave gear) is a backlash-free precision gearbox for robotics and precision mechanics. It consists of three concentric components: the elliptical Wave Generator as the drive element, the flexible Flexspline with external teeth and the rigid Circular Spline with internal teeth. The operating principle is based on the controlled elastic deformation of the Flexspline, which achieves virtually backlash-free power transmission with a high reduction ratio. Typical reduction ratios are between 1:50 and 1:160.
Installation position and function
The axis J3 (elbow) connects the upper arm and forearm of the RV-3SB/3SJB and enables the bending of the robot arm. Together with the shoulder axis J2, J3 largely determines the reach and the working envelope geometry. In fast cycles with frequent extending and retracting of the arm – for example in pick-and-place applications – the J3 gearbox is subjected to particularly heavy stress.

Mitsubishi has discontinued production of this series. The availability of spare parts is severely limited worldwide. As the elbow axis is one of the most heavily stressed positions, the demand for J3 Harmonic Drives is particularly high. We recommend early stockpiling.
