Description
Harmonic Drive J3 for Mitsubishi RV-6S/SD – axis J3 (elbow)
The Harmonic Drive J3 RV-6S is available from ROBTEC as an original spare part, ex stock.
This Harmonic Drive for axis J3 of the Mitsubishi RV-6S and RV-6SD is the backlash-free strain wave gear in the elbow axis of these popular 6 kg industrial robots. Together with J2, the elbow axis J3 is responsible for the reach and the working envelope of the robot. During every movement that requires the arm to extend or retract, the J3 Harmonic Drive works under load. An intact gearbox in this position is essential for the productivity of your system.
What is a Harmonic Drive?
Harmonic Drives are backlash-free precision gearboxes based on the strain wave gearing principle. Three components – Wave Generator, Flexspline and Circular Spline – produce a high-precision reduction in a compact design. The controlled deformation of the elastic Flexspline enables power transmission with virtually zero backlash. This property is indispensable in robotics, as even minimal gear backlash degrades the positioning accuracy of the tool flange many times over.
Installation position and function
The axis J3 (elbow) bends and extends the forearm of the RV-6S/SD. On a 6 kg robot with a typical reach of approx. 900 mm, considerable leverage forces arise at the elbow joint, especially with the arm extended and full payload. The J3 gearbox has to transmit these dynamic loads reliably at high accelerations. Typical signs of J3 wear are position deviations with changing arm positions and audible gearbox noise.
Technical details
- Installation position: axis J3 – elbow (forearm movement)
- Compatible models: Mitsubishi RV-6S, RV-6SD
- Robot type: 6-axis articulated robot, 6 kg payload
- Condition: used, technically tested and functional
- Gear type: strain wave gear (Harmonic Drive), backlash-free
Availability
Mitsubishi has discontinued production of this series. The availability of spare parts is severely limited worldwide. The RV-6S/SD is one of the most widely used Mitsubishi robots. The demand for gearbox spare parts far exceeds the available supply.
Service and retrofit
Alongside spare parts, ROBTEC also offers retrofit and modernization services for your Mitsubishi robots. When replacing J3, we recommend inspecting the J2 axis at the same time, as both axes are exposed to similar loads and often wear out at around the same time.
