This Harmonic Drive for axes J4/J5 of the Mitsubishi RV-3SB and RV-3SJB is a backlash-free strain wave gear that is used in the two inner wrist axes of these compact 3 kg robots. Together with J6, axes J4 and J5 form the three-axis wrist of the robot and are responsible for the precise orientation of the tool in space. Thanks to its compatibility with two axis positions, this gearbox is a particularly versatile spare part.
What is a Harmonic Drive?
The Harmonic Drive, also called a strain wave gear, is the standard gearbox in modern industrial robotics. Its design, consisting of Wave Generator (elliptical drive), Flexspline (elastic sleeve with external teeth) and Circular Spline (rigid ring with internal teeth), enables backlash-free power transmission with high reduction ratios. In the wrist area of robots, Harmonic Drives have to be particularly compact, as the available installation space is severely limited.
Installation position and function
The axis J4 controls the rotation of the wrist about the longitudinal axis of the forearm, while the axis J5 enables the bending of the wrist (pitch). On the RV-3SB/3SJB, both axes use the same Harmonic Drive type, which simplifies stockholding. Both axes operate under high stress in process-related tasks such as assembly, soldering or adhesive application, as extremely fine positioning is required here.
