The Harmonic Drive for axis J4 of the Mitsubishi RV-7F and RV-7FL is the backlash-free precision gearbox in the first wrist axis of these 7 kg industrial robots of the F series. The J4 axis enables the rotation of the wrist about the longitudinal axis of the forearm and is crucial for the correct orientation of the tool at the flange. The RV-7F is a powerful all-rounder, the RV-7FL the corresponding long-reach version with an extended working envelope.
What is a Harmonic Drive?
A Harmonic Drive – also called a strain wave gear – is a backlash-free reduction gear of the highest precision. It uses the controlled elastic deformation of a thin-walled, toothed component (Flexspline) for power transmission. The elliptical Wave Generator drives the Flexspline, which meshes with the rigid Circular Spline. The result is an extremely compact gearbox design with a high reduction ratio, minimal weight and practically zero backlash – ideal conditions for use in robot axes.
Installation position and function
The axis J4 is the first of the three wrist axes (J4, J5, J6) and controls the rotation of the wrist about the longitudinal axis of the forearm. In applications such as welding, bonding or screwdriving, a precise J4 axis is indispensable, as it determines the correct tool alignment in the plane of rotation. The wrist gearboxes are more compact than the main axis gearboxes, but have to handle very high rotational speeds in a small installation space.

Availability
Mitsubishi has discontinued production of this series. The availability of spare parts is severely limited worldwide. The F series was the successor to the successful S series and is still in operation in many production systems. Original spare parts are becoming increasingly scarce.
