The Harmonic Drive for axis J6 of the Mitsubishi RV-E2 is a backlash-free precision gearbox for the tool flange of this robot from the older E series. The RV-E2 was a compact second-generation 6-axis robot that was used as a reliable automation solution in many medium-sized manufacturing companies and in some cases is still running today. The J6 axis at the tool flange determines the rotational accuracy of the mounted tool and directly influences the quality of every work result.
What is a Harmonic Drive?
A Harmonic Drive (strain wave gear) is a backlash-free precision gearbox based on the strain wave gearing principle. The three core components – Wave Generator (elliptical drive), Flexspline (elastic gear) and Circular Spline (rigid outer ring) – produce an extremely precise reduction with minimal overall size. The freedom from backlash results from the constant tooth engagement over a large part of the circumference, which makes this gearing principle indispensable for robotics. Even after decades in use, Harmonic Drives still offer acceptable accuracy values.
Installation position and function
The axis J6 (tool flange) is the last rotary axis of the RV-E2. It rotates the tool mounted on the flange – be it a gripper, a screwdriving system or a measuring tool – around the longitudinal axis of the tool. In the older E series, the wrist gearboxes are compactly dimensioned and nevertheless have to deliver high positioning accuracy. Wear on the J6 gearbox manifests itself as noticeable backlash at the flange, which shows up as a position jump when the load changes.

Availability
Mitsubishi has discontinued production of this series. The availability of spare parts is severely limited worldwide. The RV-E2 has long been discontinued. Used, tested Harmonic Drives for the E series are an absolute rarity. ROBTEC is among the last suppliers that still have stock for this series.
