This Harmonic Drive for axes J1/J2 of the Mitsubishi RV-3AL is a backlash-free precision gearbox that is used both in the base axis (J1) and in the shoulder axis (J2) of this compact 6-axis robot. The RV-3AL is a lightweight robot with a 3 kg payload and extended reach (long-reach variant), which is particularly valued in confined installation situations and laboratory environments. A defective Harmonic Drive leads to an immediate loss of accuracy and must be replaced promptly.
What is a Harmonic Drive?
A Harmonic Drive – also known as a strain wave gear – is a high-precision, backlash-free reduction gear. It uses the controlled elastic deformation of a thin-walled Flexspline to transmit rotary motion with extremely high precision. The three core components – Wave Generator, Flexspline and Circular Spline – work together in such a way that reductions of 1:50 to 1:160 are achieved with practically zero backlash. This property makes the Harmonic Drive indispensable for robotics.
Installation position and function
This gearbox is compatible with axes J1 (base) and J2 (shoulder) of the RV-3AL. The J1 axis enables the rotation of the robot about its vertical axis, while the J2 axis controls the forward-backward movement of the upper arm – comparable to the human shoulder. Both axes are essential for the basic movement of the robot and carry the highest mechanical loads.

Availability
Mitsubishi has discontinued production of this series. The availability of spare parts is severely limited worldwide. The RV-3AL is an older model in the compact robot series.
