The Harmonic Drive for axis J5 of the Mitsubishi RV-6S, RV-6SD and RV-6SL is the backlash-free precision gearbox in the wrist bending axis of Mitsubishi’s best-selling 6 kg robot series. The J5 axis controls the pitch movement of the tool flange and is in continuous use in virtually every application – whether handling, assembly, welding or bonding. A worn J5 gearbox shows itself through position deviations at the tool center point (TCP).
What is a Harmonic Drive?
A Harmonic Drive (strain wave gear) is a backlash-free precision gearbox based on the strain wave gearing principle. The Wave Generator – an elliptical disc with a ball bearing – deforms the thin-walled Flexspline, whose external teeth engage with the rigid Circular Spline. This design enables extremely high reduction ratios (typically 1:50 to 1:160) with minimal installation space and practically zero gear backlash. In the wrist area of robots, the compact design is particularly important, as the available space here is severely limited.
Installation position and function
The axis J5 of the RV-6S/SD/SL enables the pitch (tilting up/down) of the tool flange. Together with J4 (rotation) and J6 (turning), it forms the three-axis wrist that determines the complete orientation of the tool in space. During path movements – for example in welding or bonding – the J5 axis has to track continuously, which leads to uniform wear. The variants include standard (RV-6S), dust protection (RV-6SD) and long reach (RV-6SL).

Availability
Mitsubishi has discontinued production of this series. The availability of spare parts is severely limited worldwide. The RV-6S/SD/SL family is one of the most widely used Mitsubishi robot series of all. Demand for all gearbox spare parts is correspondingly high.
