This servo motor for the wrist axes J4, J5 and J6 of the Mitsubishi RV-4A is a compact drive that covers all three orientation axes of this versatile 6-axis robot with 4 kg payload. As a brushless DC motor with integrated encoder, it delivers the precise position control that is indispensable for the exact alignment of tools and grippers at the end effector.
Technical features and function
The RV-4A uses an identical motor type for all three wrist axes — a design principle that considerably simplifies maintenance and spare parts stocking. The three axes J4, J5 and J6 are responsible for the spatial orientation of the tool: J4 rotates the forearm, J5 tilts the wrist and J6 turns the tool flange. The brushless motor offers an optimal ratio of frame size, weight and power. The low mass in the wrist improves the dynamics and reduces vibrations during rapid changes of orientation.
Installation position
- J4: rotation of the forearm about its longitudinal axis — located proximally in the wrist module
- J5: pitch/tilting movement of the wrist — middle position in the module
- J6: rotation of the tool flange — outermost position, directly at the flange
Replacing a wrist motor requires partial disassembly of the wrist module. Please state which axis is affected when ordering.

Availability
Mitsubishi has discontinued production. Spare parts are now only available in limited quantities worldwide. Since this motor covers three axes, we recommend stocking two to three units per robot in order to be able to respond immediately to any axis failure.
