The Harmonic Drive for axis J5 of the Mitsubishi RV-12S, RV-12SD and RV-12SL is a backlash-free precision gearbox for the wrist bending of these powerful 12 kg industrial robots. The RV-12S series is the largest member of Mitsubishi’s S series and is used in demanding handling, palletizing and machining applications. The J5 axis enables the wrist pitch and is essential for tool orientation.
What is a Harmonic Drive?
A Harmonic Drive is a strain wave gear – a backlash-free precision gearbox that is established worldwide as the standard in robotics. Its operating principle is based on three components: the elliptical Wave Generator, which deforms the thin-walled Flexspline in a controlled manner, and the rigid Circular Spline, into which the Flexspline meshes. The resulting relative movement produces a high-precision reduction with practically zero gear backlash. For the heavy axes of a 12 kg robot, correspondingly larger and more robust Harmonic Drives are required.
Installation position and function
The axis J5 is the middle one of the three wrist axes and controls the pitch movement – i.e. the tilting of the tool flange up and down. On a 12 kg robot, the J5 gearbox has to position the weight of heavy tools (grippers, welding guns, machining spindles) precisely. The RV-12S series comprises the standard model (RV-12S), the dust-protected variant (RV-12SD) and the long-reach version (RV-12SL).

Availability
Mitsubishi has discontinued production of this series. The availability of spare parts is severely limited worldwide. The 12 kg class is a core segment of industrial robotics. Many RV-12S robots are still in productive use, while the supply of spare parts is steadily decreasing.
