The Harmonic Drive for axis J2 of the Mitsubishi RV-6S and RV-6SD is the backlash-free precision gearbox in the shoulder axis of these powerful 6-axis robots with 6 kg payload. The shoulder axis J2 moves the complete forearm and upper arm of the robot and has to transmit enormous torques precisely and repeatably. Without an intact Harmonic Drive in the J2 position, the RV-6S/SD cannot meet its specifications.
What is a Harmonic Drive?
A Harmonic Drive is a backlash-free precision gearbox built according to the strain wave gearing principle. The central Wave Generator – an elliptically shaped disc with a fitted ball bearing – deforms the thin-walled Flexspline, whose external teeth engage with the Circular Spline (internal teeth). The difference in the number of teeth, typically two teeth, results in a very high reduction ratio with minimal size. The result: maximum precision in the tightest of spaces.
Installation position and function
The axis J2 (shoulder) of the RV-6S/SD is the axis with the highest torques in the entire kinematic system. It raises and lowers the robot arm with all downstream axes and the payload. On a robot with 6 kg payload and considerable reach, substantial leverage forces arise here. The J2 Harmonic Drive is therefore often the first gearbox to show signs of wear – especially in applications with many lifting and lowering cycles.

Availability
Mitsubishi has discontinued production of this series. The availability of spare parts is severely limited worldwide. As the best-selling Mitsubishi robot of its generation, the RV-6S/SD still has large numbers of units in the field. Demand for J2 gearboxes is correspondingly high.
