The Harmonic Drive for axis J1 of the Mitsubishi RV-6S and RV-6SD is the main gearbox in the base axis of these widely used 6-axis industrial robots with 6 kg payload. As a backlash-free strain wave gear, it transmits the driving force of the J1 motor to the entire robot arm and enables the precise rotary movement around the vertical base axis. The RV-6S/SD series is among the best-selling Mitsubishi robots and is in use in numerous production systems worldwide.
What is a Harmonic Drive?
A Harmonic Drive is a backlash-free precision gearbox based on the strain wave gearing principle. It consists of the Wave Generator, Flexspline and Circular Spline. The special construction enables high reduction ratios with a compact design, virtually zero backlash and excellent positioning accuracy. In axis J1 of a 6-axis robot, the Harmonic Drive has to transmit the highest torques in the entire kinematic system, as it carries the full load of all subsequent axes.
Installation position and function
The axis J1 is the base axis of the RV-6S/SD – it rotates the entire robot arm horizontally around the base plate. In a 6-axis articulated robot, J1 is the most heavily loaded axis, as it carries the weight of the complete arm plus payload. A worn Harmonic Drive shows itself through increasing position deviations, unusual noises or backlash in the gearbox that becomes noticeable during the homing run.

Availability
Mitsubishi has discontinued production of this series. The availability of spare parts is severely limited worldwide. The RV-6S/SD series has been superseded by newer models, but many systems continue to run reliably with these robots. Secure spare parts in good time to avoid unplanned downtime.
